When the top professionals and a number of the best amateurs from around town and throughout the province tee it up in the Vancouver Golf Tour's Vancouver Open (September 13-15) they'll find that the three courses being used - Fraserview, Langara & McCleery - aren't long by today's golf standards. But that hardly means the City of Vancouver facilities won't be long on challenges.
It's true, this game of golf has a way of extracting both pleasure and frustration from a few short hours spent soaking up fresh air while either waiting for slowpokes or searching for errant tee shots. It is enough to turn a golfer into a poet.
High in the hills over West Kelowna, an area once known as Westbank, sits the Shannon Lake Golf Club. As the name implies, the course is built on Shannon Lake - although the lake only comes into play on one hole late in the round. However, that one hole is one of the prettiest golf holes in the province of British Columbia and was recently named the toughest par-4 in the Kelowna area by the Kelowna Daily Courier.
Long before Sagebrush, Tobiano, Talking Rock, Tower Ranch and a host of other spectacularly scenic courses dotted the landscape of British Columbia's Interior and turned the Okanagan region into a golfing playground, Gallagher's Canyon set the bar for all that would follow.
