COOKIE GILCHRIST AT LARGE

(January 24, 20112)
cookiegilchrist150x150.jpgWelcome back to the Canadian Tour, whatever it's going to look like, Darren Griff and Danny Sahl and Mitch Evanecz and Matt Johnson.

Meanwhile, good luck to Ron Harvey Jr. and Lindsay Renolds of Christina Lake who both earned their cards on the Asian Golf Tour during the weekend.

Both Harvey and Renolds saved their best rounds for the fourth and final one in ChaAm in Hua Hin, Thailand. Harvey, of Sussex, N.B. shot a four-under 68 to finish at six-under 282, eight shots behind American medalist David Lipsky.

Renolds, one of four players from B.C. to reach the final stage of Asian Tour qualifying school, shot a final round 69 to finish on the three-under 285 number and was among the 42 players to earn cards.

Nanaimo's veteran Darren Griff, Danny Sahl of Calgary and Matt Johnston of Winnipeg all finished at one-under 287, two-shots out of earning full-play privileges.

Both Rafael Lee and John Shin missed the 36-hole cut.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Tour announced a new event for Ontario called the Great Waterway Classic and it will be held Sept. 6-9 at Smuggler's Glen in Gananoque, but still hasn't announced it's 2012 schedule or qualifying schools.

The new tournament will have a purse of $150,000.

The Canadian Tour, you'll recall, needed a loan from the PGA Tour in December to stay alive. However, there are still no details on how it will repay the loan, how the tour will be run this year or in the future and still no list of events and what the purses might be for this year.

Normally, the Times Colonist Open in Victoria kicks off the Canadian leg of the tour at the end of May or the first week of June.

Tournament director Keith Dagg says it will run June 7-10 this year and his committee has raised its usual $150,000 toward the purse. Last year the tour contributed $50,000 more.

Everything concerning 2012 is, however, still up in the air.
