Just two years after accepting his first assignment with the Professional Golfers Association of British Columbia, the Board of Directors has appointed 29-year-old Donald Miyazaki as Executive Director of the PGA of BC.
"Acting as the Association's interim Executive Director since January 2011, Donald has capably led the Association's business office through a challenging year of change and uncertainty," said Derek Thornnley, PGA of BC President.
A graduate of Simon Fraser University in 2005 with a degree in publishing and communications, Miyazaki joined Furry Creek Golf Club as a tournament coordinator. In 2010 he joined the PGA of BC and was responsible for members services and communications. With the departure of former executive director Brian Butters, Miyazaki was invited to accept that role on an interim basis.
"The Board has every confidence in Donald's ability to provide exceptional leadership, execute Board policy and serve the membership," said Thornlley. "He proved he could effectively liaise with our National office and industry partners, as well as promote the brand, image and purpose of our Association. We congratulate Donald for his dedication, hard work and leadership over the past year and welcome him to his new role as Executive Director."
An ardent member of Richmond's QGolf Club, Miyazaki was encouraged by his father to take up golf while growing up in West Vancouver. In 2000 he represented Canada in the World Junior Golf Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland in Match Play competition against the U.S.
"They smoked us, but what an exciting experience," he fondly recalls.
"I'm very honoured to accept this challenging role and I know how proud this makes my father feel," says Miyazaki. "My parents came to Canada from Japan in the mid-70's, my father loves the game and he has been my biggest supporter all along."
The B.C. branch, with over 700 members affiliated with more than 200 golfing facilities, is one of the oldest and largest chapters of the Canadian PGA, which this year is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
