Simson On Track For Senior Men's Amateur Triple Crown

The only players to win professional golf's Triple Crown -- the British Open, Canadian Open and United States Open championships -- are Lee Trevino in 1971 and Tiger Woods in 2000.

The only competitor at Ontario's St. Thomas Golf and Country Club to remain under par through 54-holes (69-72-70--211), Simson is 5-strokes under par.

A three-time winner of the British Senior Amateur, including this season, Simson is scheduled to compete for Team North Carolina in the 2010 USGA State Team Championship in California September 14-16. The USGA Senior Amateur takes place October 2-7 at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Florida.

"I'm feeling good about it (his round), although I played the last 8 holes 4-over par," said Simson, who carded three birdies and an eagle on the front nine, a birdie, one bogey and two double bogeys on the back nine to finish at 2-under 70.

"I can't complain at all, I'm going to be pretty confident going into tomorrow (Friday). I started out today just on fire, but guess what, the golf Gods came back and punished me a little on the backside, I may have lost a little focus. It's tough after you make a couple of mistakes to get back into your round."

Defending champion and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member, Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que., is in second place after shooting a 1-over par 73. Cooke, who started the day in third, is also familiar to the spotlight. He has won 11 Canadian amateur championships throughout his illustrious golf career. Seven of those victories are Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship titles and the other four were at the Canadian Men's Senior Championship.

"It's nice to be in the mix, this time I'm a little further back" said Cooke. "Paul's a wonderful golfer and its fun to watch him play."

Cooke carded four birdies and five bogeys in today's round. After his round, he described the challenges players face when competing at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club.

"This course demands a lot of shot making and very high level of it to be successful. It's not just a question of hitting greens, its narrow fairways, and you have to position your ball on the green that will allow you to have that margin of success. Loose shots here penalize you here greatly, and I think that's why the players are struggling. They aren't doing this as a profession, it's a passion and hobby. To get to that level of shot making and to handle this course with those speeds and greens is a difficult task."

Rounding out the top three is Floyd Kilgore of Grimshaw, Alt., who shot the lowest round of the day, a 3-under par 69.

Due to expected inclement weather in St. Thomas Friday, split tees (No. 1 and 10) will be used for the final-round of the 2010 Canadian Men's Senior Championship. The leaders will tee off at 9:10 a.m.
