Canadian Tour Qualifying School - Day 2

(September 2, 2010)
CANADIANTOURLOGOBLK75PIX.jpgLess than a day after an opening-round 66 gave him a share of the lead at the Canadian Tour's Fall Qualifying School in Burlington, Ont., Tobias Rosendahl of Sweden found a way to improve on that score, shooting a 65 at Hidden Lake Golf Club Thursday to hold down the pole position with a two-day total of 11-under par 131.

Rosendahl leads Canadian Robbie Greenwell of Georgetown, Ont.,, who shot a 7-under par 64 at Hidden Lake GC and Derek Oakey (66) of the U.S. by two shots.

On Wednesday, 89 players from nine countries began the quest for a 2011 Canadian Tour card. Once the final putt drops Saturday afternoon, 11 players will earn fully exempt playing privileges while the next 11, plus ties, will secure non-exempt or conditional status.

Rosendahl was 3-under after eight holes Thursday and birdied three of his final four to take over top spot. Still playing as an amateur, Rosendahl plans on turning pro the moment his final round is done Saturday.

Both Greenwell and Oakey are attempting to regain status following frustrating 2010 Canadian Tour seasons.

Greenwell, coming off a season in which he took home a cheque in just three of nine starts, was even par through seven holes Thursday before finding another gear. Starting with an eagle on the eighth, he played his final 11 holes at 7-under and birdied four straight holes starting on the par-4 12th.

Oakey put up a bogey-free round of his own, opening his day with a birdie and making the turn at 3-under. In 2010, the native of Atlanta, Ga. made his first two cuts of the year but then played on the weekend in just two of his next seven starts and failed to retain his card.

Both Greenwell and Oakey missed the cut at last week's $325,000 Canadian Tour Championship.

For close to four decades, the annual Fall Q-School has allowed numerous future PGA Tour champions to get their starts on the Canadian Tour. Dave Barr, Stephen Ames, Ian Leggatt, Kirk Triplett, Tim Petrovic and Billy Ray Brown are just some of the names that have joined the tour ranks at the autumn school. PGA Tour rookie Graham DeLaet, the Canadian Tour's Order of Merit winner in 2009, earned Canadian Tour playing privileges at Fall Q-School. Jon Mills, David Hearn, Wes Heffernan, Derek Gillespie, Dan Swanson, James Love and Lee Curry are a few of the Canadians to also come through the qualifier.

Although Fall Qualifying School traditionally marks the official end to the tour season, 2010 is an exception. The inaugural Desert Dunes Classic will close the season schedule this November in Palm Springs, California. The season-ending event will also allow Canadian Tour members who get through the first stage of PGA Tour Q-School the opportunity to stay in game shape between the opening and second stages.

One of the highlights of the 2010 schedule was the $325,000 Canadian Tour Championship, which Goldberg captured last week and featured players competing for the highest purse in Canadian Tour history. The Players Cup in Winnipeg saw a $300,000 pot while Victoria, Edmonton and Saskatchewan featured $250,000 purses.

On the strength of three wins in 2010, Californian Aaron Goldberg set an all-time tour record for earnings in one season and is the runaway winner of the Order of Merit. Goldberg and fellow American Brock Mackenzie, who won the Times Colonist Open in Victoria earlier this summer, earned exemptions into the second stage of the PGA Tour's three-tiered Q-School.
