Simson, who comes into the Canadian tournament with the experience of having played in 46 career USGA championships, fired a 3-under par 69 Tuesday and has a one shot advantage over Howard Broun of Calgary, Alt., who was in the lead most of the day.

"I got up and down from a bad spot on three, made about a four footer," said Simson. "Made about a 15-footer on 5 for birdie. 34 on the back nine and 35 on the front nine for 69 - not a bad start - the greens are slick, really special."

The St. Thomas club's fairways are proving quite a challenge for many of the players. Only nine of the 154 competitors shot even par or better.

Three-time British Columbia Senior Men's champion Gudmand Lindbjerg of Port Moody, B.C. is tied for third with four time Canadian champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que., Terry Townend of St-Lazare, Que., Michael Mealia of Thornhill, Ont., Gary Melanson of Woodstock, N.B., Alan Fadel of Toledo, OH, Dave Raabis, Rocky Mountain House, Alt., and Garry Spence of London, Ont.

In inter-provincial team championship play, British Columbia heads into Wednesday's final round with a team total of 226 and a 6-stroke lead over Team Nova Scotia, 232. In third is Team Quebec with a first round total of 233. Host Team Ontario is in eighth place with 237.

In the Super Senior Division (70+ years) Townend leads with an even par 72; Phillip Leckey of Tampa, FL with 5-over par 77 heads into tomorrow's round in second place; and tied for third are Larry Lecomte of Richmond, B.C., Ontarians Albert Dietrich of Kitchener, Donald White of London, and Norman Goldman of Toronto, all at 9-over par 81.

The Canadian Men's Senior Champion will earn an exemption into the USGA Senior Championship at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, October 2-7, in Orlando, FL.
