Canada Defeats Trinidad for CJGA Stephen Ames Cup

With Canada needing only four points in the final round of singles matches, the Canadians players were able to split their matches on Friday (August 20) and picked up the necessary points needed to capture the Ames Cup.

"It was a great final day of matches to end a fantastic week of golf for both sides" said tournament host and PGA Tour Professional Stephen Ames. "I am sure the experience the kids had this week, both golfing and culturally will stay with them for a long time, and that is really the main goal of the event."

In the Boys 15 & Under Division, Matt Williams of Calgary led off the round playing against Robert Boocock. After opening a commanding lead through nine holes, Boocock never let up, closing the margin to one heading to the 18th tee. After Williams hit his approach into the front greenside bunker, and Boocock hitting the middle of the green, Williams was able to get up and down, halving the hole and winning the match to take the first point of the day.

Sun Kim of I'ile Perrot, Quebec was the second match of the day, playing against his opponent Matthew Marquez. Kim played solid and consistent on the front nine, hitting fairways and greens, and taking a 1 up lead at the turn. The back proved to be a little more difficult, and the solid play of Trinidad's Marquez was just too much for Kim, dropping the match 3&2.

In what was one of the day's most exciting matches, Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alberta aced the par 3 15th hole with the match two up to go dormie on 16.

"It was my first hole in one and it couldn't have come at a better time" said Fleming. "I was so pumped on the 16th tee that I had to settle myself down".

Fleming missed a short par putt on 16 to keep his opponent in the match, but stuck his approach on 17 to five feet and dropped the birdie putt to win the match 2&1.

Soobin Kim of Coquitlam, playing in the Girls 18 & Under Division, faced Monifa Sealy and both girls made the turn all square in the match and looking for some excitement on the back nine. Kim was solid with her play on the back, winning holes #12, 14, and 15 to take a three-up lead and dormie on the 16th tee box. With the pressure on to close out her opponent, Kim sank a five foot putt for par to halve the hole and win her match 3&2.

After capturing the first title on foreign soil, the Canadian side will now look to retain the cup as the event will head back to Canada next year for the seventh addition.
