Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, B.C., a former assistant golf professional who now teaches French immersion in the public system, defeated Anne Carr of Renton Wash., 4 and 3 to win the 9th PNGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship at Clarkston Golf and Country Club in Clarkston, Wash.
A member of Swan-e-Set Bay Resort & Golf Club in Pitt Meadows and a mother of two, Turbide won the opening hole of her match against Carr, the 2008 PNGA Women's Mid-Amateur winner, and was 4 up through the first eight holes before a bogey cost her the 9th hole.
Turbide came right back with a birdie on 10 to go back to 4 up. However, Carr, the 2006 PNGA Senior Women's Amateur champion who had earlier eliminated tournament medalist and 2010 BC Senior Women's Amateur Champion Phyllis Laschuk of Vancouver, saw that margin reduced to 2 up after a Turbide bogey-streak at 11 and 13 cost her two holes.
Turbide, however, pared the 14th and birdied 15 to end the slide and win the match 4 and 3.
After starting the tournament as the #3 seed and winning 5 and 4 in her opening match, Turbide was twice forced to play 19 holes before advancing to today's final, her first in PNGA competition.
Note:
Four of BC's outstanding players -- Alison Murdoch, Karen Pultz, Carin Gallie and Holly Horwood - are expected to play in the Alberta Seniors at Silver Springs in Calgary July 27-29.
