Sydnee Michael: Canadian Women's Amateur Champion

Playing at Ontario's Kingsville Golf & Country Club, Michaels began strongly with a six-under par 66 and held the lead the through the first three rounds before closing with a par 72 for a nine under 279 total and a two shot margin of victory.

Danielle Kang of Thousand Oaks, caught up to the leader early on the back nine of the final round, but a bogey with three holes remaining proved her undoing, leaving her alone in second place.

Rounding out the top three was Team Canada member Sara-Maude Juneau of Fossambault, Que., who played competitively to earn herself a place in the top three, shooting an equally impressive 2-under par 70.

"I'm so excited," said Michaels. "I feel great, and I'm proud and honoured to have won. I've wanted to play in Canada, I have, and I got it done."

The 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur is the 22-year-old UCLA graduate's first time playing in a Canadian golf championship. With the win, Michaels has earned herself an exemption into the 2010 CN Canadian Women's Open, the only LPGA Tour stop in Canada. It will be held at St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg, Man., from August 23-29.

The remaining Team Canada members finished as follows: Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., in seventh with 287 (+2); Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., T11 with Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., and Development Squad member Christine Wong of Richmond, B.C at 295 (+7); Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont., and Development Squad member Anne-Catherine Tanguay of Quebec, Que., finished 296 (+8) ; Maude-Aimee LeBlanc of Sherbrooke, Que., with 300 (+12) with T24; and Development Squad member Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Toronto, Ont., with 310 (+22) T51.

In the Mid-Amateur division (25 + yrs.), Christine Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C., and Marie-Therese Torti of Candiac, Que., found themselves tied at 306 (+18). Torti took home the trophy with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Andrea Kosa of Calgary, Alb., finished third at 307 (+19).

Torti also took home the title in the Mid-Master Division (40+ yrs.). Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Ont., came in second at 312 (+24); rounding out the top three was 1989 Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur champion, Cheryll Damphouse of Amherstburg, Ont., who scored 313 (+25).

In an effort to raise the overall prestige and international status of Canada's championships, Golf Canada is undertaking a five-year enhancement program with a goal of making the national championships "Best in Class".

Enhancements to date include attracting top fields including international competitors, securing the best championship courses in Canada and exemptions into top international events for tournament champions. These improvements are being implemented as part of a five-year plan spearheaded by Golf Canada Championships Committee members Dennis Kavelman, Kelly Roberts and Peter McCarthy.

The increase in international players for the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur Championship is in part a result of this initiative.

The 2011 Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur Championship will be held in British Columbia at Duncan Meadows Golf & Country Club.
