British Columbia is the defending champion for the upcoming Junior America's Cup Team Matches scheduled to get underway in Albuquerque, New Mexico July 27-29.
With players from 17 different associations throughout the western parts of Canada, Mexico and the United States, the 38th Annual Junior America's Cup will be hosted by the Sun Country PGA and the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association. The Isleta Eagle GC, a classic New Mexico layout, is hosting the Boy's JAC for the first time.
Members of the BC JAC Team for 2010:
Kevin Kwon, Swan-e-set Bay Resort & GC, Maple Ridge
Brian Jung, Pitt Meadows Golf Club, Pitt Meadows
Connor Kozak, Spallumcheen Golf Club, Vernon,
Cameron Davison, Duncan Meadows Golf Club, Duncan
Harry White of Vancouver is the non-playing Captain and a charter founding member of the JAC (1972).
Last year the BC team, led by Charlie Hughes' five-under par 65 and Sally Pini Medalist Justin Shins' two-under 68, cruised to a tournament low round of five-under 205 to take home the team title.
The Junior America's Cup is a tradition that began in 1959 with representatives from junior golf associations in Mexico, Alberta, and Southern California. The three groups brought five participants each to play in a stroke play team tournament that was unlike any tournament previously available to the junior golfer. The Cup expanded to eleven teams in 1972 with British Columbia, Idaho, Mexico, Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, San Diego, Southern California, Washington and Utah joining. Since 1974 six other junior golf associations have joined the Junior America's Cup including Arizona, Hawaii, Colorado, the Sun Country, Montana, and finally Wyoming who joined in 2001.
A unique and important feature of the JAC matches and a tradition since 1973 at Pebble Beach, all visiting teams stay with Isleta Eagle GC member families who live nearby.
The Cup has seen the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and Peter Jacobsen play in its annual tournament, and looks forward to the new faces that could someday reach the top of the game.
2010 will mark the second time that New Mexico will host the Junior America's Cup after a fantastic tournament at Tanoan Country Club in 1993.
