A bogey at the 19th hole cost Langley, BC's Darren Wallace a chance he may have had of going to the U.S. Masters Championship in 2011 after he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 85th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
After taking the lead with a birdie on the first hole, the former Canadian Amateur champion (2004) was in front or all square through most of his match against Murrieta, Calif.'s Josh Anderson. He had moved to 1 up coming off the 17th green but was forced into extra holes when Anderson dropped a birdie at the 18th. A bogey on the 410-yard par-4 first hole brought an end to Wallace's run to the finals
Seeded 14th after 36 holes of stroke play at the Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center, Wallace won his opening match 2 and 1, was forced to play 20 holes in the round of 32 before advancing to this morning's round of eight with a 1 up victory Thursday afternoon against the #3 seed Patrick Reed, a member of the NCAA champion Augusta State.
Wallace's former University of Washington Husky teammate, Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, the R&A's #7 ranked amateur in the world, who lost in last year's final after being the stroke play medalist, was eliminated in this week's first round of match play.
Wallace, Taylor and Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont., who was eliminated in the round of 16, were the only Canadians among the 64 players who made it through to match play.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links, established in 1922 for bona fide public-course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
