UBC T-Bird Women Seeking Their 7th Canadian Title

Fresh off their runaway triumph in the U.S. NAIA championship last week, the T-Birds have jumped into a six stroke lead ahead of the University of Victoria Vikes in this week's opening round of the Canadian University/College Championships conducted by Golf Canada at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, N.B.

With Kylie Barros leading the way after an opening round of 73, the Thunderbirds have posted a women's team score of 297. Anne Balser shot 75 to pace the UVic Vikings.

In men's competition, University of Montreal have a two shot lead over the defending champions from UBC with the University of Western Ontario another shot back in third place.

In all, 156 male and female golfers from post-secondary institutes across Canada travelled to Fredericton, N.B., to compete for both team and individual titles at this year's event. The field is comprised of 20 men's and 10 women's teams as well as six individuals.

The team championship involves five-player teams competing over 72 holes with the top four individual scores counting towards the team total. After 54 holes, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men's and top five women's teams, as well as individuals within 15 strokes of the lead. Individual champions will also be crowned after 72 holes.

As part of Golf Canada's Pathway to Champions, both the male and female individuals achieving the low score after 72 holes of play will earn an exemption into the 2010 Canadian Men's Amateur Championship and the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur Championship respectively.
