Canadian PGA TOUR regulars Mike Weir and Stephen Ames will join Canadian Tour regular Kent Eger of Regina in the field of 156 players in this week's United States Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. All three have drawn morning start times for Thursday's first round on the famed Pacific Ocean-side course which measures 7,040 yards and plays to Par 71.

Eger, who now lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., qualified for the Open after shooting (68-66) 8-under par 134 and taking medalist honours at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore. For the first two rounds at Pebble Beach he'll be paired with amateur Alex Martin of Liberty Twp., Ohio and Jon Curran of Hopkinton, Mass.

Weir, the 2003 Masters Champion whose first of eight PGA TOUR victories was the 1999 Air Canada Championship in Surrey, B.C., will play with South Africa's Tim Clark and K/J. Choi during the first two days. Ames, A four-time PGA TOUR winner -- he won the Children's Miracle Netweork Classic last year -- is paired with Stuart Appleby of Australia and Rory Sabbatini of South Africa on Thursday and Friday.

Alena Sharp of Ontario, still looking for her first victory in her sixth season on the LPGA Tour, gave herself a chance after taking the first round lead in this weekend's State Farm Classic, shooting 6-under par 66. Before play was suspended Sunday afternoon she had completed nine holes at 2-under and was tied for 20th at 13-under for the tournament.

PEI's Lorie Kane, a 15-year LPGA Tour veteran with four victories, hasn't been to the winner's circle since 2001 and that's the last time a Canadian has won on the Tour. In the history of the LPGA a total of nine Canadians have recorded 24 victories, led by Sandra Post who had eight.

Oshawa, Ont.'s Jon Mills is top Canadian on the Nationwide tour, in 27th place with $60,450 from seven of the 11 events he's played in. Brian DeCorso of Guelph, Ont., is in 116th place with just over $5,000 from five tournaments out of 10 and Julien Trudeau, a distant relative of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, is T173 with $2,255.

James Allenby of Langley is the inaugural winner of the West Coast Golf Group Invitational Pro-Am, which took place over 54 holes at the company's Belmont, Hazelmere and Swan-e-set Resort golf courses. Allenby took home $10,000 after sinking a 10-foot putt for par on the final hole, defeating Adam Hadwin by one shot. Hadwin collected $6,000. Just three off the lead was veteran teaching pro Phil Jonas who earned $4,000.

Korea won the Men's Division of the 13th World University Golf Championship, held in Anteqauere, Alaga, Spain this past week defeating Japan by three shots and the host team from Spain by four. The Canadian quartet of Garrett Rank, Mitchell Evanz, Philipe-Andre Bannon and Mathiedu Gingras finished in a distant fifth place 12 shots back of the leaders. Spain's Gerard Piris Mateu took medalist honours at (72 69 72 68 - - 281) 7-under par.
