Christine Wong Pads Her BC Women's Amateur Lead

Wong recorded a near flawless 4-under par 68 on day one, two shots better than the previous course record, but 24 hours later she left the course after shooting 73 during a round that included a pair of double bogeys. However, her 3-under par 141 total leaves her seven strokes in front of Jessica Wallace of Langley and six up on Soo Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam and A Ram Choi of Surrey.

The 18-year-old Wong, a rising sophomore star at San Diego State University, won a USGA sectional qualifier in May and next week is entered in the U.S. Women's Open at historic Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.

Two-time Canadian and Irish Senior Women's Amateur champion Alison Murdoch of Victoria, a medalist in last week's Washington State Senior Women's amateur, carded a 1-over par 73 to take over the lead in the BC Mid-Amateur Championship.

Defending Amateur and Mid-Amateur title holder Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, is tied for second in the Mid-Amateur competition at 11-over 155. Karen Pultz of Vancouver, is in third at 12-over 156.

Following Wednesday's second round of competition, the Zone Net/Gross and Club Net/Gross winners were finalized. Fraser Valley Zone 3 players, Pamela Burneski and Melissa Mabanta, won the club team net honours while the club team gross competition was won by the Quilchena Golf & Country Club team of sisters, Christine and Stephanie Wong.

From Zone 3, Elaine Blatchford, playing out of Surrey Golf Club, and Karen Pultz, playing out of Peace Portal, took the zone net competition. The zone gross competition was claimed by Zone 2 competitors Lynda Palahniuk, playing out of Kelowna Golf & Country Club, and Kyla Inaba, playing out of Gallagher's Canyon Golf Club.

While the BC Women's Amateur Championship continues through to Friday the Mid-Amateur crown will be determined after 54 holes on Thursday.

The top four finishers will represent B.C at the Royale Cup Nationale Women's Amateur Championship at Kingsville Golf & Country Club in Kingsville, Ontario July 26 - July 30.
