The University of British Columbia women's team moved one round closer to capturing their seventh consecutive Canadian University/College Championship Wednesday while some 80 players in the men's competition still have some holes to finish before beginning what should be Thursday's final round.
The defending UBC Thunderbirds completed their third round on a rain soaked Kingswood Park course in Fredericton, N.B with a 901 total -- 25 shots in front of the University of Victoria Vikings, although that's one shot less than yesterday's lead. In third place with a score of 992 is the University of Montreal.
In women's individual play, the TBird's Kylie Barros (73-74-76,-- 223) is tied for first place with UVic's Anne Balser (75-74-74--223). Jocelyn Alford of UBC (75-77-74-226) is alone in third.
"The greens are pretty consistent which we all found really helpful," said Barros. "The course played really great and we avoided the bad weather which was an added bonus for us, they (the greens) rolled evenly and I was able to make some good putts."
Accustomed to playing in BC's spring showers, Barros said the women are "used to the rain." In terms of their game plan for the final round they don't want to get too far ahead of themselves.
"We are just going to stick with what we've been doing by focusing on the process, taking it one hole at a time. There are some strong teams out there - hopefully we can maintain our lead."
On the men's side, 80 players finished their third round before the Championship was suspended due to darkness at 8:56 p.m. Twenty-three players have yet to finish.
With only partial scoring in for day three, the men's team division and individual competition are not complete. However, as darkness fell over Kingswood Park, Université Laval was in the lead, 10 strokes ahead of the first-round leader, the University of British Columbia, and Humber College. In the men's individual competition, University of Montreal's Philippe André Bannon is in first place, with a score of 138 for two rounds.
"The weather was a lot better this afternoon and the greens dried up a bit. The game plan is different, the ball will roll more, similar to Monday," said Bannon. "The focus is the same though. We have a plan with the team and hope to all play well - as well as the first round. For me, I will try to probably do the same [game plan], sometimes you make putts or sometimes not."
The cut Thursday will result in the top 10 teams in the men's division and the top five teams in the women's division battling it out for the national title. Individuals within 15 strokes of the lead will also tee off tomorrow for the final round.
In all, 156 male and female golfers from post-secondary institutes across Canada travelled to Fredericton, N.B., to compete for both team and individual titles at this year's event. The field is comprised of 20 men's and 10 women's teams as well as six individuals.
The team championship involves five-player teams competing over 72 holes with the top four individual scores counting towards the team total. After 54 holes, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men's and top five women's teams, as well as individuals within 15 strokes of the lead. Individual champions will also be crowned after 72 holes.
