Nicole Jordan of Sidney, B.C. and Michelle McCann of Courtenay, B.C., are the first two female recruits to join the Simon Fraser University Clan women's golf team for the 2010-11 season.
After a three-season hiatus, the men's golf team returned to competition during the 2009-10 campaign, while the women's golf team is scheduled to return to the links in the Fall of 2010. Based in Burnaby, B.C., the SFU Clan teams train and practice at the Vancouver Golf Club in nearby Coquitlam.
"Both of these young women are excellent students who were attracted to SFU by its academic reputation, the new women's golf team, and SFU's impending entry into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II," said head coach John Buchanan.
"Nicole has a fantastic work ethic and will have a growing influence on our program as she matures. Michelle took up golf seriously two years ago and has all ready cut her RCGA handicap in half. Both women have the drive and determination that will be an asset in laying the foundation for a successful women's golf program here at Simon Fraser University."
Jordan, who was born in Surrey but moved to Sidney in 1996, came in third place alongside her Zone-6 golf team at the 2008 BC Summer Games in Kelowna. While at Parkland Secondary School, Jordan played on the soccer team, and was a four-year member of the Parkland golf team, qualifying for the Island Championships, and is coached by Robert Ratcliffe of the RCGA.
"I chose SFU because it is a better fit than any of the other post secondary institutions I looked at," said Jordan, who plans on studying communications while at SFU. "SFU's acceptance into the NCAA has made me very excited about being a part of the golf team. I think the opportunity to play golf while balancing my academics is an offer I just couldn't refuse."
McCann joins the Clan after attending Highland Secondary School in Courtenay, and posted the low net score at the Mid-Island Tournament in 2009 at the Nanaimo Golf Club. Born in Belleville, Ontario, McCann finished first in her zone last year, and placed fourth at her club championship, dropping her handicap from 25.3 to 10.2 last season.
"I chose SFU because it is starting from the ground up and as the first class we can set the standard for years to come," said McCann, who plans on studying business at SFU. "I'm also excited to be a part of the first school in Canada that will join the NCAA and Division II."
Simon Fraser will join the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2010-11 as part of their transition into NCAA Division II.
Both the University of British Columbia Thurderbirds and University of Victoria Vikes mens and ladies teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
