Led by the torrid twosome of Kyle German and Derek Thornley the Vancouver Golf Tour has opened up a four point lead after winning five of six opening round matches in the inaugural two-day Ryder Cup competition between the VGT and the Vancouver Island Pro Tour.
The first day matches consisted of playing 9 holes of Best Ball and 9 holes using alternate shots.
Playing on his home course at Richmond Country Club, Thornley and partner German scored the tournament's largest margin of victory, winning 5 & 4 against John Randle and Ross Mantel from Vancouver Island, ending their match on the 14th hole.
Another dominating victory was recorded by the VGT's Jeremy Paradis and Andrew Smeeth who defeated Lance McCulough and Jamie Heffernan 4-up on the 14th hole.
The partnership of Vancouver Golf Tour veterans Bryn Parry and Phil Jonas defeated Mike Pearce and Gordie Scott 4-up on the 15th hole while Oliver Tubb and Jeff Dagg downed Mac McLeod and Tony Harris 3-up on the 16th hole.
Rich Ingle and Shawn Hansen scored the Island Golf Tour's lone victory by shutting down Norm Jarvis and Fraser Mullholland 2-up on the 17th hole.
The closest match of the day was scored by Dan Swanson and John Shin who came-from-behind to win the 17th and 18th holes for a 1-up triumph over the Island's Edd Boudreau and Germain Francouer.
The second round, being played at Point Roberts Golf Course in Washington State, will consist of twelve singles matches, valued at one point a piece in the contest to capture the new Van Isle Cup trophy!
