Despite stumbling to a 1-over par 73 . . . nine shots above his first round score . . . Texan Vince Jewell has maintained his lead atop the leaderboard after 36 holes of the Canadian Tour's Florida Qualifying School taking place at Southern Hills Plantation Club, in Brooksvillle, Florida.
On a day when brisk winds added another element to an already-challenging layout at Southern Hills Plantation Club, Jewell was nine shots higher than his opening day score at nearby Hernando Oaks. But with a 36-hole total of 7-under 137, he remains three shots in front of fellow Americans Jason Anthony (72) and Cody Slover (71).
From The Canadian Tour
David Williamson of Halifax posted 73 to go with his opening round of 68 to grab a share of fourth place at 3-under par 141 with four others, including Toronto's Nick Kenney (67-74).
Only six players managed to put up a number under par in the second round. Calgary amateur Michael Knight was one of them, matching the low round of the day with a 69 to climb into a tie for ninth. Tyler Mancini of Winnipeg (70) has a share of 11th spot.
Jewell, who took a three-shot edge into Wednesday after a blistering opening-day 8-under 64, had a much tougher time trying to tame Southern Hills. He was 3-over after 10 holes Wednesday before rebounding with birdies on the par-4 14th and par-3 17th to maintain his cushion.
Once play concludes Friday afternoon, exempt cards will be awarded to the top eight finishers while the next eight and ties will earn non-exempt status for the 2010 season.
Izzy Beisiegel of Montreal, who p'osted a 76 on Tuesday, had a run of five consecutive bogeys starting on her fourth hole and struggled to a 6-over 42 on the front side. She eventually signed for an 83 to fall all the way to 63rd.
Should he keep his emotions in check over the next couple of days, Jewell will officially be a 38-year-old rookie on the Canadian Tour sometime late Friday. A professional for 16 years, Jewell was the North Texas PGA Player of the Year in 2007 and qualified for the Byron Nelson Classic three straight years beginning in 2006.
Kenney, a former captain of the Old Dominion University golf team who also played for the Ontario junior squad, began the second round with a share of second and kept himself within arm's reach of the lead. Knight had an eventful round with seven birdies and four bogeys marked on his card.
The Florida qualifier is the first of two Canadian Tour qualifying tournaments over the next few weeks. Later this month, Q-School will be staged in San Diego before the tour moves into Mexico for a pair of events.
In late May, the B.C. Q-School will be held in Parksville immediately prior to the start of the summer-long Canadian swing, which gets underway with the $250,000 Times Colonist Open in Victoria.
Highlights of the season include the $325,000 Canadian Tour Championship, which marks the largest purse in the circuit's history, the $300,000 Players Cup in Winnipeg and $250,000 purses in Victoria, Edmonton and Saskatoon.
