Tying the tournament record and registering his first victory since winning the 2008 BC Amateur title, North Vancouver's Eugene Wong posted a 10-under par 203 at the USC Invitational in California this week to earn his first NCAA collegiate career championship in his second season at the University of Oregon.
"This has to be one of the highlights of all-time for Oregon golf," said head coach Casey Martin after Wong, a sophomore, and his sixth-ranked Ducks stroked their way to a tournament team record score of 21-under (279-277-275-- 831) and claimed the school's first team championship in the event's 32 years.
"It was incredible," said Martin. "This was a stacked field and the guys came out and just smoked them,"
Wong began the day in second place after earlier rounds of 65 and 69 and closed with another 69 by posting three birdies and one bogey over the 6,869-yard par 71 track, thus becoming only the third Oregon golfer to win the tournament and first since Ryan Lavoie in 2000. Past champions at the USC Invitational include PGA veterans Corey Pavin, Paul Casey and Tiger Woods,
The team championship was U of O's first since winning the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz last spring.
Wong posted four outstanding victories in 2008, beginning with the BC High School Triple A individual title in his final year at Handsworth Secondary. A stunning birdie on the final hole in San Diego helped him win the World Junior championship, then he closed the season by winning both the BC Junior crown and the BC Amateur championship.
