A lone double bogey cost Graham Delaet a chance to be among the top 10 leaders after two rounds of the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii, however, at 4-under par 136 and tied for 18th place the Weyburn, Sask., native is still in an excellent position to make his inaugural PGA TOUR rookie debut a memorable experience.
Five shots behind tournament leader Ryan Palmer and one back of fellow Canadian Stephen Ames of Calgary, Delaet was looking poised and playing with great confidence Friday as recorded four birdies and moved to 5-under through 13 holes. However a double bogey at the 14th was his only blemish, which he partially made up for with a clutch birdie putt at the par-5 18th and a round of 67.
Ames offered a more diversified performance on the day, posting six birdies and three bogeys for his 67 and a tie for 12th place.
Another Calgarian, Chris Baryla, now a Vernon, BC resident, missed the cut for the top 70 players and ties at one over par 141. Shooting even par 70 on Thursday, Baryla stumbled around the Waialae Country Club course Friday, collecting a triple, a double, three single bogeys and three birdies for a round of 75.
Palmer birdied three of his last four holes to post a 4-under 66, and moved out of a six-way tie for the 18-hole lead and into sole possession of the36-hole lead at 9-under 131, one shot ahead of defending champion Zach Johnson (67), Chad Campbell (64) and Robert Allenby (67).
Vijay Singh, the 2005 Sony Open champion (69-72), managed to eagle the par-5 18th hole and just made the cut on the number. The field for the weekend is now reduced to 80 players.
