PGA TOUR Qualifying School Graduates

PGATOURlogo47pix.jpgMike Weir and Stephen Ames . . . meet Graham Delaet and Chris Baryla . . . your new traveling companions and Canada's two newest members of the PGA TOUR for 2010.

Delaet, the Boise, Idaho resident from Weyburn, Saskatchewan, who was the top gun on this year's Canadian Tour, graduated in eighth place after completing six grueling rounds in 15-under par at the PGA TOUR's Qualifying School in West Palm Beach, Florida Monday.

The 5'11' Delaet, who turns 28 next month, has enjoyed a magnificent campaign in 2009, starting his season off with a victory on the South African Tour, followed by two wins on the Canadian Tour and a trip to China with Victoria's Stuart Anderson last month to represent Canada in the World Cup.

"I'll tell you, my wife and I are going to Hawaii on the 17th for six days and I'm looking forward to that - we both are," Delaet told Golf News Now reporter Ian Hutchinson. "I'm not going to take my clubs and it's going to be awesome."

Baryla, the tenacious Calgarian who now calls Vernon, B.C. his home,
finished 19th on the 2009 Nationwide Tour money list with $217,000 and won an automatic berth on the PGA TOUR, although he also attended Q-School to see if he could improve his ranking for the first part of the 2010 campaign. He might just as well have saved his money because he ended up tied for 42nd at 5-under 427.

With five top-10 finishes in 14 Nationwide events, the 27-year-old Baryla introduced himself to the PGA TOUR this summer by shooting a closing round 6-under 66, good for 8th place and a tie with Stephen Ames as low Canadians in the RBC Canadian Open.

Baryla becomes the first player from British Columbia to join the PGA TOUR for a regular season since Jim Rutledge of Victoria earned his way on to 'The Big Show' in the same fashion in 2006 . . . winning nearly $258,000 and finishing in 14th place on the Nationwide money list. He failed to retain his playing privileges in 2007, however,

Julien Trudeau of Montreal came within a stroke of getting his PGA TOUR card. The distant relative of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau finished at 8-under par 424 and tied with seven other players in 26th place, one shot shy of reaching the top 25 who got their cards for 2010.

Trudeau's friends raised $4,000 to send him to the final round of q-school and cover the price tag of hotels, dinners and the rental car. He rewarded them by winning a Nationwide Tour card, but he waited for hours after his round ended to see if 8 under would be good enough, first sipping coffee in the locker room and then beer in the parking lot.

"One way or the other, I'm so happy to be here," Trudeau said. "And so lucky."

The Q-School medalist was Troy Merritt, like Delaet, a former Boise State golf team standout, who has never played in a PGA TOUR event. Merritt made a double bogey on the final hole for a 3-under 69, finishing at 22 under and one shot ahead of TOUR veteran Jeff Maggert.

"Probably the most satisfying double-bogey I've ever made," Merritt said.

Among those tied for 8th place was 44-year-old J.P. Hayes (15 under) Last year Hayes disqualified himself from the second stage of Q-school for inadvertently using a non-conforming golf ball, This is the sixth time in his career Hayes has successfully graduated from Q-School. He has two career wins on TOUR, the last of which came at the 2002 John Deere Classic.
