(November 22/09)
Some final round heroics saved the day for a handful of Canadians at the close of this week's second stage of PGA TOUR Qualifying School, however, a superb five-under par 65 at the close of qualifying for the Champions Tour wasn't quite enough for Victoria's Jim Rutledge to get the break he needed in order to spend 2010 playing on the senior tour.
Contrary to what BC GOLF NEWS reported on Friday, we apologize for rushing to post results from the Scottsdale, Arizona Champions Tour site before it was completely finished and crediting Rutledge with acquiring his conditional card for 2010, when in fact, Jim ended up in a six-way tie for 11th spot, just two shots shy of getting into a playoff for the fifth and final exempt card.
He did, however, get into a six-man playoff for the final two of seven conditional cards, but alas, he failed to survive that playoff.
Rutledge began Friday's round tied for 27th place and raced up the leaderboard by going 4-under par through his first nine holes, only to come up one shot shy of what he needed on the back nine. Now his only option to play on the Champions Tour next season will be through the arduous routine of Monday qualifying.
Rod Spittle of Niagra Falls, Ont., was also eliminated in the playoff for the final two conditional cards, while Ray Stewart of Abbotsford finished tied for 45th place.

The list of Canadians hoping to qualify for a chance to make it to 'the Big Show' was reduced from 21 down to eight following four rounds of second stage play over six sites throughout the United States Saturday.
The most encouraging comeback was staged by Weyburn, Saskatchewan's Graham Delaet who shot a four-under 67 in Georgia and bounded from 28th place into a tie for 13th to make it among the top 20 and ties who now advance to Florida in two weeks time for the PGA TOUR's 108-hole final Q-School marathon.
Almost immediately after his round Delaet hopped aboard a jet bound for China. He and Stuart Anderson of Victoria will represent Canada in the two-man OMEGA Mission Hills team World Cup championship that begins November 26.
British Columbia's Bryn Parry, the Vancouver Golf Tour Order of Merit winner, and rookie pro Adam Hadwin didn't get off to a particularly strong start and failed to advance beyond the second stage.
