(November 21/090)
After recording an eagle, 20 birdies and just seven bogys in 72 pressure-packed holes at Qualifying-School in Arizona, veteran touring professional Jim Rutledge of Victoria, BC came from behind with a final round of 66 to narrowly gain a conditional exempt playing card on the Champions Tour for 2010.
Finishing at 10-under par 274 and seven shots behind medalist Peter Senior of Australia, the 50-year-old Rutledge missed by two strokes making it into the top five and ties where he would have qualified for fully exempt status on this lucrative tour for seniors 50 and over.
Tied with Rutledge in 11th place was Ontario's Rod Spittle of Niagara Falls, who has enjoyed previous Champions Tour experience and who shot a closing round of 70.
Also in the final field of 78 were Yvan Beauchemin and Ben Boudreau of Quebec and Abbottsford, BC's Ray Stewart.
In addition to the 16 players who squeezed into the top 12 and ties, the top-30 finishers and ties became eligible to compete for spots in open qualifiers at all co-sponsored events on the Champions Tour next year.
