Italy Captures Its 1st World Cup Title - Canada 25th

(November 29/09)
ItalianWorldCupWave125pix.jpgItaly's Francesco and Edoardo Molinari became the first brother combination to win the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup, beating Sweden and Ireland by a stroke Sunday to give the Italian nation its first victory in this 55-year-old international team event.

The Molinari brothers shot a 4-under 68 in the alternate-shot final round on Mission Hills' Olazabal Course. They finished at 29 under and earned $875,000 each in the tournament that featured two rounds of better ball and two of alternate shot.

ItaliansWinWorldCup500pix.jpgFrancesco hit a long greenside bunker shot to 3 feet on the 18th to set up Edoardo's winning par putt. Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson, the winners last year, shot a 69 to tie for second with Ireland's Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell (70).

The Canadian twosome of Graham Delaet of Weyburn, Saskatchewan and Calgary-born Stuart Anderson, a Victoria, B.C. resident, fourth after the opening round, found themselves sinking toward the back of the pack Sunday. A double bogey, three bogeys and one birdie left the Canadian Tour veterans with a final round of 79 for a 72-hole total of 3-under par 279 and 20 shots off the pace of the winning Italians.

This result means Canada, the inaugural host of what was once The Canada Cup in 1953, will have to attend a qualifying tournament next year in order to compete again at Missions Hills in 2010.

The Molinari brothers will be sharing the top prize of $1.7 million US. while the Canadian team members will split $46,000 US.
