(November 25/09)
A two-shot swing on the final hole spelled the difference between playing in next year's RBC Canadian Open championship on the PGA TOUR and watching it on television for the winner of the 2009 Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship.
Ben Boudreau of Longueuil, Quebec, twice birdied the 18th hole at the Wanamaker PGA Club course in Port St. Lucie, Florida, first in regulation to get into a playoff, then on the first extra hole, to steal the title from Vancouver's Jeff Buder, who had led the tournament for two days and even held a two stroke lead after 53 holes.
"I thought if I could hit a big drive down the fairway I would have a chance to make a birdie and I just tried to do it all over again in the playoff," said Boudreau, the head professional at Le Parcours Du Cerf, who has now earned an exemption into the 2010 Canadian Open at St. George's Golf & Country Club in Toronto.
"Jeff and I had a wild fight all day long and I know he is a little disappointed but he played great golf all week and I'm just happy to be the last man standing."
On the 54th hole Buder put his drive into a bunker that led to his second bogey in two days at the same 18th hole, leaving the Head Professional from Point Grey G&CC tied at 9-under par 207 with Boudreau, two shots clear of Danny King of Milton, Ontario and three up on Quebec's Daniel Talbot of St-Basile Le Grand and Eric Landreville of Melocheville and Ontario's Ken Tarling of Sandford.
Boudreau, Head Professional at Le Parcours Du Cerf, made four birdies and no bogies during his trip around the Wanamaker Course at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida but it was his back-to-back birdies on the hardest hole on the golf course for the win that had everyone talking after the round.
"He had to putt first to save his par before I had a shot at my birdie on the last hole and when he missed it I said to myself this is it, just knock it in," said Boudreau, who just got back from the final stage of Champions Tour Q-School where he finished tied for 72nd place.
Boudreau, who played in the 1994 Canadian Open at Glen Abbey, looked like he was going to run out of steam in his pursuit of Buder but after making great par saves on the 16th and 17th hole the dramatics for the 18th hole fell into place.
"I'm so excited to play in the Canadian Open next year at St. George's," said Boudreau, who's scorecard was surprisingly vacant of any birdies on the par-5's in the final round, rare considering he is one of the longest players in the field. "I don't know how I did it but I didn't think about it all day until the final putt dropped."
Boudreau left Port St. Lucie, Florida, with a first place cheque for $12,000. Buder returned to Vancouver with $7,000.
"I'm obviously a bit disappointed not to close it out but my hat is off to Ben after making birdie on the hardest hole on this entire golf course, not once but twice," said Buder, Head Professional of Point Grey Golf & Country Club. "I had a fun week and I'll be back next year to see if I can win this thing."
2005 & 2006 Champion Danny King fired a 4-under par 68 to finish alone in 3rd place. If not for a double bogey on the ninth hole King would have joined the playoff with Boudreau and Buder.
Buder led off the event with an impressive bogey-free round of eight-under-par 64 in Monday's first round. He was trying to follow in the footsteps of good friend Kyle German, HP of Point Roberts G&CC, who won the event in 2008 and played in this summer's RBC Canadian Open. German finished ninth in this year's CPC with a three-under-par 69 in the final round after earlier struggling with a balky putter.
German and Vernon G&CC Executive Professional Cec Ferguson remain the only B.C.-based winners of the prestigious CPC event. With his runner-up finish, Buder earns an exemption into next year's CPC, awarded to the top 15 and ties.
Eight of the nine PGA of BC members competing in the $85,000 Florida event made the 36-hole cut.

B.C.'s zone team in the Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship waged a tight battle for inter-zone supremacy against strong teams from Ontario and Quebec, but came up short. Ontario won the title with a six-under total of 426, followed by Quebec at five-under 427. BC combined for a 36-hole total of 428, four under par, good for third place among the nine CPGA zone teams. The top three scores of the four team members each day counted for the team total.
B.C.'s team members each earned $350 from the total inter-zone purse of $5,000.
Teams were selected on the basis of individual professionals' finishes in the qualifier for the CPC, which was the PGA of BC Championship held in August at Crown Isle Golf Resort.
