BC's Ben Griffin Leading PNGA Mid-Amateur

With five birdies and a single bogey on his card, defending champion Ben Griffin of Victoria, British Columbia is one of three players sharing first place after the opening round of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men's Mid-Amateur Championship in Lynden, Washingnton.

Joining Griffin at the top after rounds of four-under par 68 on a challenging Homestead Farms Golf Resort course are Mike Haack of Bellevue, WA and Bjorn Bjorke of Port Orchard, WA.

Only seven of the 105 players in the field managed to break par.

Haack has already had an impressive summer taking home Medalist honors at the U.S. Open Local Qualifying at The Home Course in May and a top-10 finish at the Washington Open as well.

Bjorke, a member of the Washington State Golf Association PNGA Cup Team earlier this year, is looking to improve upon his top-5 finish at last years PNGA Men's Mid-Amateur. Just like Griffin, he used five birdies and just one lone bogey to secure his spot at the top of the leaderboard.

Griffin is hoping to become the first player since Dan Okholm in 1993 and 1994 to win the title two years in a row.

To be eligible for the Pacific Northwest Men's Mid-Amateur Championship, contestants must have reached their 25th birthday by the first day of the competition and also carry a handicap index of 8.4 or less. The championship consists of 54 holes of stroke play with a cut to the low 60 scores after 36 holes.
