Wales Dominates Senior Ladies British Open

LGUgolfLogo92pixels.jpgVicki Thomas of Carmarthen, Wales held off a spirited challenge from compatriot Rozalyn Adams to become the 2009 Senior Ladies' British Open Amateur Champion in challenging conditions on the rugged Welsh coast.

Playing on a course toughened considerably by both the weather and course officials, Thomas posted a 10-over par total of (76-74-82) 232, three strokes clear of Adams and seven ahead of Felicity Coulter, both from Wales.

Canadian Karen Pultz from Surrey, BC turned in one of her finest overseas results by moving into a fourth place tie at 18-over 240.

Alison Murdoch of Victoria, BC, who won this tournament in 2007 and last week captured her fourth Irish Senior Women's Open Golf Championship, fell out of contention with a final round of 85 and finished tied for eighth, 10 shots behind Thomas.

Calgary's Diane Williams, the 1995 British champion, was 21 shots off the pace and tied for 29th.

Starting her final round in the pole position, this was Thomas' first Senior Ladies' British Open Amateur title and afterwards she happily exclaimed when looking at the long list of names on the trophy that she was "on there with the best of them now!".
