The Canadian Men's Senior Amateur Championship, an event that has grown over the past 47 years to become one of the most popular national amateur tournaments on the calendar of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, tees-off on Vancouver Island September 1 at Victoria, BC's Gorge Vale Golf Club with a field of 153 players.
Looking to defend his Canadian senior title is seven-time Mid-Amateur and three-time Men's Senior champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que., a renowned Canadian golf course architect.
Among past senior champions vying for the 48th title will be Peter Howe of Crawford Bay, B.C. (2006); Robert Fugère of Gatineau, Que. (2005); Dave Webber of Dartmouth, N.S. (2004); André Gagné of Boischatel, Que. (2003) and George Stokes of New Hamburg, Ont. (1998). 2008 runner-up Patrick Tallent of Vienna, VA and former Canadian Mid-Amateur champion Frank Van Dornick of Camrose, Alta., will also be on hand, as will Canadian rock music icon and golf enthusiast Tom Cochrane.
"We are very excited to bring the Canadian Men's Senior Championship to Gorge Vale," said Adam Helmer, RCGA tournament director. "The Canadian Senior is one of the most prestigious events of our championship season and the event is always a great finish to a very successful tournament year."
The Canadian Senior Championship is open to male amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by September 1, 2009, with the winner being awarded the John Rankin Memorial Trophy.
The Canadian Super Senior Championship, running concurrently over the first 36-holes, is open to male amateur golfers who have reached their 70th birthday by September 1, 2009, with the winner receiving the Governors Cup.
The event will also play host to the Senior Inter-provincial Team Championship, being held in conjunction with the first two rounds of championship play. Québec will be looking to defend their title as provincial champions, having won the team championship seven times prior.
Representing British Columbia will be provincial senior champion Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody; runner-up and super senior medalist Bill Wilms of Delta; Steve Berry of Sooke and John Gallacher of Burnaby
After practice rounds Monday the 72-hole championship will tee-off Tuesday with a 36-hole cut on Wednesday reducing the field to the top 70 and ties.
