Medalist Seo Hee Moon of Mukilteo, Wash. went wire to wire to win the 54th PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship hosted by the Fairwood Golf and Country Club in Renton, Washington August 20.
The 17-year=old Moon was matched up against 14-year-old, #14 seed Sierra Bezdicek of Colbert, Wash. in the championship match which Moon won 5 and 4.
Moon was no stranger to this championship; in her last four years she has collected 2 runner-up finishes (2006, 2007) was stroke play qualifying medalist (2009) and now has captured the title of 54th PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Champion.
The championship consisted of 18-holes of stroke play qualifying that determined flights for the match play portion of the championship. In all, a full field of 72 junior girls under the age of 18 competed at this year’s championship.
In the stroke competition Coquitlam, British Columbia's Jennifer Yang tied for third after shooting a two-over par 73. BC Junior Girl's Champion A. Ram Choi of Surrey recorded a 75 to tie for seventh and Victoria's Haley Kruse tied for 30th after shooting 85.
In the round of 16 Yang won her match 7 and 6 against Amanda Beyke of Federal Way, Wash., while Choi was eliminated on the second extra hole in a match against Cali Hipp of Caldwell, Idaho.
In the quarterfinal Yang won 4 and 3 against Mallory Kent of Tukwila of Wash., but lost 4 and 2 to Moon in the semifinal.
To be eligible for the Pacific Northwest Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship, contestants must not have reached their 18th birthday by the final day of the competition and also must carry a handicap index of 40.4 or less.
