With a third round score of 4-over par 76, Christina Spence Proteau has ended Jackie LIttle's three year reign as British Columbia's Women's Mid-Amateur Champion and now has her sights set on putting her name in the record book by being the first to also win the BC Women's Amateur title in the same year.
A resident of Port Alberni, Spence Proteau finished the Mid-Amateur portion of the BC Golf Association's competition at Canoe Creek Golf Course in Salmon Arm 13 strokes ahead of Little with a 54-hole total of (73-70-76—219) 3-over par
“I’m really proud of myself today,” said the new Mid-Amateur champion. “This course is tough – let up once and you’ve got a mistake. You have to hit perfect shots to reap the rewards.”
Little, the record-holding five-time BC Amateur Champion, 2008 BC Senior title-holder and the only winner of the three previous BC Mid-Amateur championships, finished as the runner-up at 16-over par 232.
Kim Evans of Terrace, B.C. posted a final round of 1-over par 73 to finish in the third spot tied with Jessica Luciuk of Barrhead, Alberta.
Meantime, heading into Friday's final round of the Women’s Amateur, Spence Proteau is two shots in front of Soo Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam and Sue Kim of Langley, who are both at 5-over 221.
After setting a women's course record of 4-under 68 in Wednesday's second round, Soo Bin Kim hit the skids Thursday, shooting 5-over 77 with an eagle, one birdie, one bogey and three double bogies.
National Team member Sue Kim, who set an unprecedented record last year by capturing back-to-back victories on the CN Canadian Women's Professional Tour---the first amateur winner on this Tour---has been consistent in her play recording rounds of 74-74-73.
Lindy LaBauve of Scottsdale, Arizona sits in fourth place at 7-over 223 followed by Christine Wong of Richmond, B.C. at 8-over 224 for fifth. Defending champion, Kira Meixner of Richmond, B.C. sits in sixth at 10-over 226.
Soo Bin Kim, Sue Kim and Christine Wong will represent British Columbia at the Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island this August as golf makes its first appearance at the country’s most important competition for developing athletes.
Friday's top four finishers will represent B.C. at the Royale Cup National Women's Amateur Championship at Royal Oaks Golf Links in Moncton, NB. July 27 – July 31.
The B.C. Women’s Amateur/Mid Amateur is one of 13 provincial championships conducted annually by the BCGA. More information is available at www.bcga.org.
