Wheeldon collected five birdies and two bogeys on day one for a 3-under par 69 to lead the championship by one shot, with four of those birdies coming on the back nine. In his second round the 20-year-old University of Louisville freshman turned in a flawless 5-under par 67 with four of his five birdies coming on the front side.
His eclectic score through 36 holes is 9-under 63. The competative course record at Pitt Meadows is 8-under 64.
“I concentrated on playing steady today and I hit really solid,” said Wheeldon, who is 8-under par at 136. “I left a few out there but hit some long putts and finished well.”
Sharing second place at 4-under 140 are Bryan Lichimo of North Vancouver and Justin Shin of Maple Ridge. Defending champion, Eugene Wong of North Vancouver and Matthew Cavelti of West Vancouver are tied for fourth at 3-under 141.
“Tomorrow is moving day and it’s easier to be aggressive to position yourself for day four,” says Wong, who is also the current BC Amateur titleholder. “I eagled 18 today. I bombed the drive, dropped it within 15 ft of the hole and made the putt.”
A field of 70 players survived the cut at 9-over 153 including a cluster of 11 players tied for 60th place.
The top four finishers will represent B.C at the Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship at Westmount Golf & Country Club in Kitchener, ON August 2-6, 2009.
