Shoot Low Or Go Home in TELUS Edmonton Open

It took a hot round of seven under par 65 to gain the first day lead at the Canadian Tour's $150,000 TELUS Edmonton Open and that's exactly what Brady Stockton and Robert Gates dialed in on a warm Thursday in the Alberta capital.

Just one shot behind are Liam Kendregan and Jon Turcott while bunched together in fourth place on the crowded leaderboard at 67 are last week's winner Graham DeLaet, Canadian and Nationwide Tour veteran Jim Rutledge, Danny Sahl, Garrett Sapp,  Brent Schwarzrock, Pan Singhaseni, George Coetzee aznd Eugene Smith.

Stockton had just one par against six birdies and two bogeys on his front side and sank four in a row starting at seven.

“The putter was working really well but I was doing a lot of scrambling,” said Stockton, who had nine birdies but also took several detours into the trees.

“It seems that every single time I found the fairway, I made birdie, but otherwise, I was scrambling. I seem to be well known for that.”

“I don’t know what the problem is but I can’t keep it straight for the whole round and I end up scrambling a lot," said the Arizona resident. "My short game is going very well and if I could straighten the ball out, I could start shooting some very low scores.

One back of the leaders is Jon Turcott.

“It’s been a long time since I had a good round,” said Turcott, who lost his Nationwide Tour card last fall. “There wasn’t much grinding going on; it was one of those nonchalant rounds without any long par putts, or anything.

In the field of  157 international players, 72 golfers broke par, including 32 who were in the 60s.

Sitting well back after producing a 1-under 71 is Oshawa's Derek Gillespie who, it was finally revealed this week, won $100,000 for coming out on top in his TV match on The Golf channel's popular BIG BREAK series.
