Riley Wheeldon - 2009 BC Junior Boys' Champion

With 23 birdies over 72 holes, two flawless rounds and only three bogeys and one double bogey, Wheeldon finished eight stokes in front of the field---his 14-under par 270 total equaling the lowest four round score recorded in the tournament's 63-year-history.

“I really came into today’s round focused,” said Wheeldon, 19. “I knew with the right shots that the numbers were out there. I wanted to start playing like I know I can.”

His 64 tied the single round competitive course record set at iitt Meadows by professional Bryn Parry a few years ago and follows the record he established on his home course at Comox last month, shooting a 7-under 63 on route to winning the Glacier Greens Open.

“I was putting great today. Putting can be my Achilles heel but I tried to stay calm and let the birdies come to me.”

A freshman and a member of the University of Louisville Cardinals during this past school season, Wheeldon led wire-to-wire and left no openings for defending champion, Eugene Wong of North Vancouver. Wong shot a closing 67 to finish second at 10-under 278.

“I tried my best today,” said Wong, who is also the reigning BC Amateur Champion and will defend that title on Vancouver Island at Duncan Meadows Golf Club next week.

Justin Shin of Maple Ridge, two shots behind Wheeldon when the final round began, wound up in third place at 280. Bryan Lichimo of North Vancouver was fourth at 4-under 284.

Wheeldon, Shin, Lichimo and Nicholas Russell of Vancouver will comprise the B.C. Junior Boys’ team for the Canadian Junior Boys’ Inter-provincial Championship at Westmount Golf & Country Club in Kitchener, ON August 2-6, 2009.

The B.C. Junior Boys’ Zone and Club team champions were crowned Friday with Capilano Golf & Country Club players, Matthew Cavelti and Lichimo claiming the club team honours. From Zone 4, Jay Kim, Kevin Kwon, Brian Jung and Shin took the Zone competition.
