Despite encountering three bogies over her final six holes and seeing her three stroke lead evaporate, Christina Spence Porteau of Port Alberni came up with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff to win her second British Columbia Woman's Amateur Championship.
At Canoe Creek Golf Course in Salmon Arm this week, Spence Proteau had led or shared the lead from the opening round until a combination of bogies over her closing holes and a pair of birdies by 15-year-old Soo Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam on the 16th---from 30-feet---and the 18th---from 20-feet---left Spence Proteau in the difficult position of having to sink a 10-footer for par to force the playoff with both players tied at 5-over 293.
"I just wanted to throw up, basically," she told the Vancouver Sun's Brad Zeimer with a laugh. "I didn't play badly today, but I didn't play as well as I would have liked to on the back. But Soo-Bin made big putts — 20- and 30-footers on 16 and 18 — so there's not much you can do about that.
The playoff ended on the second extra hole with Spence Porteau, who works with a law firm in her hometown of Port Alberni, recording a birdie and to defeat Kim,
Langley's Sue Kim finished in third place at 7-over 295 followed by defending champion Kira Meixner or Richmond at 8-over.
Spence Proteau, Sue Kim, Meixner and Dominique Pytlewski will comprise the B.C. Team for the Royale Cup National Women's Amateur Championship at Royal Oaks Golf Links in Moncton, NB. July 27 – July 31.
Soo Bin Kim, Christine Wong and Lauren Taylor declined spots for the BC Women’s Amateur Team in order to represent B.C. at the Girls Junior Americas Cup. British Columbia clinched second place in the 2008 Girls Junior America’s, lead by Christine Wong who claimed first place – the highest finish ever for a team from B.C.
In addition to receiving the prestigious Flumerfelt Cup earlier this week, the 26-year-old Spence Proteau captured the 54-hole BC Women's Mid- Amatedur title, which had been won three years running by this year's runner-up, Jackie Little.
Canoe Creek Golf Course, with it's more than 7,000 yards of open fields, grass-faced bunkers, large greens, numerous creeks, waterfalls, fountains and natural marshes, with fescue defining many of the fairways, is the first signatuire course designed by PGA TOUR veteran Dave Barr of BC.
The B.C. Women’s Amateur/Mid Amateur are among of 13 provincial championships conducted annually by the BCGA. A full listing of players, the leaderboard, and final results can also be found at www.bcga.org.
