With a two-shot lead going into the final round of the TELUS Edmonton Open Sunday, Graham Delaet would like nothing better than to return to his home province with a chance to win his third consecutive Canadian Tour Championship in next week's Saskatchewan Open.
First, however, he'll have to fend off the challenges this week of Andrew Parr, James Hahn, Jim Rutledge and Brady Stockton who are tied for second two shots behind and Danny Sahl, George Coetzee, Liam Kendregan and Hugo Leon, who share sixth place, three strokes off the lead.
DeLaet’s 12 under par 204 and two shot advantage, coupled with last week's victory in the ATB Financial Classic, gives the Weyburn native a chance to try to become the Tour's first back-to-back winner of the 2009 season. Last August, DeLaet's first pro victory came in the Desjardins Montreal Open pres. by Lexus, which he'll defend this year.
“I didn’t think 70 would hold up for the lead,” said DeLaet. “It always gets a little more difficult on the weekend. We also had swirling winds and the long delay.
“I didn’t play my greatest golf but I am happy I kept it together. Hopefully, today was my bad round of the week, and if it is, I should have a good chance tomorrow.”
DeLaet missed two putts from inside five feet, which would have put some daylight between him and the pack.
“I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to put together any clutch shots down the final stretch but I did make that downhill putt (from 18 feet) on the final hole,” said DeLaet.
“No matter what you have shot on the day, making a birdie on 18 always feels good.”
AMJ CAMPBELL MOVING DAY
- Marc Peterson’s 66 was low round of the day.
- Andrew Parr and Graham DeLaet will be in the final group.
- For the second day in a row a weather delay held up play for over an hour and a half Saturday afternoon.
