For the first time since the inception of the World Amateur Golf Ranking System began in 2007 Canada has become the most dominate nation with Nick Taylor of British Columbia and Matt Hill of Ontario being ranked No. 1 & No. 2 in the world.
After qualifying for this week's United States Open by winning medalist honours last week for the second year in a row, the 21-year-old Taylor, from Abbotford, moved up four places to pass Hill, his RCGA National team co-member from Bright's Grove, Ont., who became the R&A's No. 2 ranked player in last week's ratings.
This season, the University of Washington junior has rewritten his school’s record book, registering the most victories in a single year (4), the lowest 54-hole total (198), the lowest third-round score (63) and becoming the Washington Husky’s first Pac-10 Player of the Year. He has finished in the top-ten in eight of his eleven college tournaments played this year.
Last week’s number one, Morgan Hoffmann of the LU.S., slipped two places to No. 3..
Thursday Taylor tees off in the 109th playing of the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Hill, who accompanied the balance of Canada's National Team to England to play in the British Amateur Open, failed to qualify for the field of 64 who are now engaged in match play competition.
