Pamela Burneski -- WSGA Women's Amateur Champion

A member of the BC Golf Association as well as a member at the Homestead Farms Golf Resort in Washington, Burneski toured the 5,989-yard Oakbrook Golf and Country Club course in Lakewood in (74-75-79—228) 12-over par to record a three-stroke win.

Tied for runner-up at 231 were Lelsie Folsom of Seattle and first round leader, Cathy Kim of Bellevue, Wash.
 

Six weeks ago Burneski teamed up with two-time BC Junior champion Sue Kim of Langley to win the WSGA Women's Best Ball Championship at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

This coming Fall Burneski will join coach Clint Wallman and the rest of the Indiana Hoosiers woman's golf team as a Freshman and the reigning 2009 Washington State Women's Amateur Champion.

In the Senior Amateur championship, which also concluded Thursday, Yasue Alkins of Lacey, Wash., fired the low round of the day---5-over par 76---for a 54-hole total of 13-over 229 and her first WSGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.

Alkins scored a two-stroke victory over Ginny Burkey of Fircrest, Wash., and Alison Murdoch of Victoria, BC. The trio had battled back and forth all round long but the momentum finally turned after Alkins chipped in for a birdie on the difficult par-4 15th hole. She followed that up with two solid pars and a safe bogey at the par-4 finishing hole to claim the title.

The WSGA Women’s Amateur and Senior Women’s Amateur Championships are two of 11 state championships conducted annually by the WSGA.

Meantime, in the 83rd Washington State Men’s Amateur Championship last year’s runner-up, Derek Berg of Kenmore, Wash. holds the 54-hole lead following an even par round of 72 in the difficult windy conditions at Palouse Ridge Golf Club to bring his three-day total to 6-under par 210.
