A Ragin-Cajun from North Vancouver, 20-year-old Thomas Petts, who just completed his sophomore year at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, will be the only Canadian entered in next month's United States Men's Amateur Public Links Championship.

An honour student majoring in Business Management, Petts fired rounds of 71 and 68 for 5-under par 139 and was the medalist over a field of 40 in sectional qualifying at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington Monday. Olympia, WA's Jonathan McCaslin was a stroke behind and also qualified while Kelowna, BC's Brett De Vries shot 143 and will be a first alternate.

Petts won't exactly be lonely when the 2009 U.S. Publinx gets underway July 13-18 at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course at the University of Oklahoma.  Two of his Ragin-Cajun teammates, Andrew Noto and  Kyle Pritchard, also qualified. Noto was the medalist at The Bridges in Bay St. Louis, Miss.

Meanwhile, advancing to the round of 32 in the 33rd U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass., Port Coquitlam's Caroline Kim (right), a Junior with the University of Southern California Trojans, won her opening match, defeating Courtney Gunter of Matthews, N.C., 3&2.

Quebec native Sara-Maude Juneau, the only other Canadian to make it into the top 64, defeated Carly Werwie, Kenosha, Wis on the second extra hole of their match.

Among the Canadians who did not qualify were Alexa Kim, Taylor, Schmidt, Jill Hardy, Anna Kim and Victoria Choi.

The final match for the U.S. Women's Amateur Publinx will be 36 holes on Saturday.
