The UBC men's team, the defending champions, share first place with Quebec's Laval University after both teams recorded scores of 12-over par 300. Waterloo Warriors sit three strokes back at 15-over (303) while the University of Alberta is alone in fourth place at 305.
The UBC women's team---five-time champions over the past six seasons---hold a commanding 15-stroke lead over the defending champions, University of Victoria Vikes, thanks in part to a hole-in-one by UBC’s Alyssa Human. Humber College sits alone in third at 36-over (324) while the University of Toronto is fourth at 332.
Three players, Mathieu Gingras of Laval, Scott Samuel of the University of Toronto and Matt Jacobs of Hamilton's McMaster University, share first place among the men at even-par 72 while Human, who used a 4-iron from 159 yards for her first career ace, leads the women's individual scoring at 2-over 74.
A total of 156 male and female golfers, comprised of 20 men’s and 10 women’s teams, as well as six individuals, from post-secondary institutes across Canada, are competing over 72 holes. The top four individual scores from each five-member team counts toward the team total. After 54 holes, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men’s and top five women’s teams, as well as individuals within 15 strokes of the lead. Individual champions will also be crowned after 72 holes.
As part of the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s Pathway to Champions, both the low scoring male and female medalists will earn an exemption into the 2009 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and the 2009 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship respectively.
