Talking Rock Talks Tough at PNGA Men's Master-40

The only player to shoot under par on day one of the 34th Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men's Master - 40 Amateur Championship at Talking Rock Resort and Quaaout Lodge in Chase, B.C is Bob Burton whose 2-under par round of 70 is good enough for a two-stroke lead.

From Everett, Washington and the 2006 champion, Burton has the early lead in the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying segment of the championship, which is being contested by 69 players over the deceptively difficult 6,635-yard Talking Rock course which Monday yielded an average score of just 81.4.

Howard Broun of Calgary, AB and Norris Dancer of Star, Idaho, are tied for second place at par 72 while 2008 runner-up Harry Ferguson, of Invermere, B.C., Ken Sissons of Calgary, AB and 1981 BC Amateur Champion Steve Berry of Sooke, BC share fourth place at one-over 73.

The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine flights for the match play portion of the championship. The lowest 32 scorers from the qualifying rounds will advance to the Championship Flight, with each of the remaining flights being comprised of eight contestants. All matches are single-elimination and contested over 18 holes.

To be eligible for the Pacific Northwest Men's Master-40 Amateur Championship, one of 15 regional championships conducted annually by the PNGA, contestants must have reached their 40th birthday by the first day of the competition and also carry a handicap index of 16.4 or less.
