PNGA Master - 40 Medalist Gone, Only 8 Remain

Upsets and excitement best describe the action that took place at Talking Rock Resort and Quaaout Lodge in Chase, British Columbia after match play rounds of 32 and 16 saw the field at the 34th PNGA Men's Master - 40 Amateur Championship reduced to eight and the elimination of the tournament's medalist.

Howard Broun of Calgary, the 36-hole medalist, was ousted in the round of 16 by 17th seeded Rob Whiton of Vancouver Wednesday. Now Whiton will face off Thursday against another Vancouverite, Per Hansen, who at number 25 is the highest seeded player remaining.

Also surviving into the quarterfinals in the upper half of the 32-man Championsihp Flight were former PNGA Mid-Amateur champion Steve Savage of Surrey, B.C. and 2007 B.C. Senior Amateur champion John Gallacher of Burnaby, BC who will face off against each other in the morning round of eight.

In the lower half of the bracket, number 2 seed Greg Bismeyer of Pitt Meadows, BC used two very solid rounds, including a 6&5 Wednesday afternoon victory in his march to the quarterfinals. Bismeyer's next opponent will be Star, Idaho's Norris Dancer, a PNGA Cup participant for the Idaho Golf Association team earlier this month.

Last year's PNGA Master-40 runner-up Harry Ferguson of Invermere, B.C. continued his string of success at this championship with two easy victories. He faces a very intriguing match-up tomorrow morning as he goes up against 2006 PNGA Master-40 champion Bob Burton of Everett, Wash.

To be eligible for the Pacific Northwest Men's Master-40 Amateur Championship, contestants must have reached their 40th birthday by the first day of the competition and also carry a handicap index of 16.4 or less.

The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine flights for the match play portion of the championship. The lowest 32 scorers from the qualifying rounds will advance to the Championship Flight, with each of the remaining flights being comprised of eight contestants. All matches are single-elimination and contested over 18 holes.

The PNGA Men's Master-40 is one of 15 regional championships conducted annually. For more information about the PNGA and the Master-40, visit www.thepnga.org.
