Oregon's Battistella Sets New Canadian Tour Record

It took a woman's competitive course record of one-under par 71 by Taya Battistella of Bend, Oregon to claim the first round lead at the CN Canadian Women's Tour season opening event at Seymour Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver, B.C.

Battistella, who is enjoying her fifth year of professional golf, is no stranger to the CN Canadian Women's Tour. In 2006, the University of Colorado grad took home top spot at the Tour's western event which was held at Duncan Meadows Golf and Country Club, located on Vancouver Island. The win earned the diminutive dynamo entry into the 2006 CN Canadian Women's Open held at London Hunt and Golf Club in London, Ont. where she tied for 70th.

Her colourful opening-round included four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey, giving her a single shot lead heading into tomorrow's final round.

The 29-year old is focused on playing to the best of her abilities with high hopes of earning another exemption into Canada's only LPGA Tour event.

"I love playing in Canada and always tell other pros about the CN Canadian Women's Tour," said Battistella. "I felt great today and want to make sure I continue to play well tomorrow."

Courtney Erdman of Altadena, CA has sole possession of second place after firing an even-par 72; while Ashley Sholer of Hamilton, Ont. and Marina Choi of Los Angeles, CA shot matching 1-over par 73's to sit tied for third.

With 20 players within five-strokes of the lead and rain expected to touchdown at Seymour tomorrow, the exemption and $10,000 (CAD) winners' cheque are still up-for-grabs.

The penalizing layout of Seymour Golf and Country Club is proving to be a superb challenge for the 90 player field. The narrow tree-lined fairways combined with well guarded undulating greens have proven to be Seymour's true scoring guardians.

"With greens like these, you really have to pay attention," added Battistella. "You have to get close, make par, and get out of there."

The course yielded one eagle, 126 birdies, 764 pars, 537 bogeys and 130 double bogeys during today's play. Tee-times for tomorrow's final round start at 8am with the leaders teeing-off at 12:10pm (PDT).

CN Canadian Women's Tour notes from Seymour Golf and Country Club:

Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C. is leading the amateur contingent at Seymour Golf and Country Club. The 13-year old member of Swan-e-set Bay Resort and Country Club shot a 2-over par 74 today to sit tiedfor fifth overall.

The Seymour Golf and Country Club opened for play in 1954, with a major update to the front nine completed in 2005.

LPGA Tour standout and CN Canadian Women's Tour alumnae Yani Tseng captured the Corning Classic yesterday by one-stroke over Soo-Yun Kang and Paula Creamer. Tseng, a native of Taiwan, captured the west coast event on the CN Canadian Women's Tour in 2007, combining for a two-round total 4-under par at the Vancouver Golf Club.

Players will be competing on the 2009 CN Canadian Women's Tour for a total purse of $180,000 (CDN). Each of the three events will feature a purse of $60,000 including $10,000 for the winner.

Players competing on the Tour will also earn points towards the CN Canadian Women's Tour Order of Merit. The player with the most points at the end of the season will earn the Jocelyne Bourassa Player of the Year award.

Now in its ninth year, the CN Canadian Women's Tour has established a reputation as one of the premier women's developmental golf tours in North America. Many of Canada's top professionals have competed on the Tour including Lorie Kane, Isabelle Beisiegel and Alena Sharp. Each event plays out over 36 holes. With close to 300 participants annually in three championships across the country, the CN Canadian Women's Tour continues to raise the bar for women's professional golf nationwide.

More information about the CN Canadian Women's Tour including a full listing of competitors, post-round results and championship start times are available through the CN Canadian Women's Tour website at www.cncanadianwomenstour.com or Royal Canadian Golf Association website at www.rcga.org.
