BC Egg Cup Trophies Awarded To High School Champions

The first school name to appear on the new British Columbia Fresh Egg Cup trophy awarded for "AAA" supremacy will be that of Thomas Haney Secondary.

The five-member team from Maple Ridge recaptured the BC title they held in 2007 by scoring a five-stroke victory over Surrey's Earl Marriott, 586 to 591. Gleneagle in Coquitlam finished in third place at 592.

The Thomas Haney team of Justin Shin (139), Charlie Hughes (142), Justin Lee (152), Duncan Bohlen (155) and Tae In Lee (159) posted a team total 8 birdies and 2 eagles and finished 18-over par at Chilliwack Golf & Country Club. The team score is computed by totaling the lowest four scores after each round.

With 3-under par scores of 139, Shin and Earl Marriott's Adam Svensson tied for the individual lead, however, on the second hole of sudden death Svennsson drove out of bounds and the "AAA" medalist honour was awarded to Shin, a member of Team BC. The victory earns him a spot in the 2009 B.C. Junior Boys’ Championship at Pitt Meadows Golf Club July 7-10, 2009.

One of the factors contributing to the Thomas Haney triumph was the play of Hughes, who carded the low round of the tournament Wednesday at 5-under 66.

Shin’s fellow Team BC teammate, Christine Wong of McMath in Richmond finished as the tournament's top female at 2-over par 144, good enough for 8th place. As members of Team BC, Wong and Shin have now qualified to play in the Canada Summer Games this year in P.E.I. This is the first time golf has been included in the Canada Summer Games.

For the first time in the 12-year history of the "AAA" BC High School Golf Championship, not just one but two players recorded a hole-in-one. The lucky recipients were Nick Meade of Mark Isfeld in Courtenay and Gunntas Sidhu of Terry Fox in Port Coquitlam.

Earlier this week at Royalwood Golf, St. Thomas More of Burnaby recorded a 12-stroke victory over their Chilliwack host GW Graham to win the "AA" division title for the second year in a row. In the "A" division a Royalwood, Maple Ridge Christian took its first title with a 10 shot victory over Immaculata in Kelowna.

The three new uniquely designed BC Egg Cup Championship trophies awarded on behalf of the sponsoring BC Egg Marketing Board will be engraved and put on display at the BC Golf Museum until 2010. Each of the winning schools and the medalists received memorable plaques.
