American John Ellis has his hands full attempting to become the first Canadian Tour member to successfully defend his title at the Corona Mexican PGA Championship.
Ellis and fellow American Eugene Smith both shot 67 Saturday to share the third round lead at 10-under par 206.
One stroke behind at 207 is Andy Matthews and Australian Stephen Dartnall who were also five under today.
At eight under 208 are Costa Rica Classic winner Mauricio Molina (66), Wes Heffernan (67), Javier Quevedo (70) and Adam Speirs who had a 71.
Fresh from a winter off, Smith is showing mid-season form.
"Although I played okay last week, I didn't really come in here with any expectations," he said. "I held it steady on the front nine and was one under but then bogeyed the tenth before I went on my run."
His run was four consecutive birdies starting at No. 12; with every putt coming from inside ten feet. The New Jersey native also chipped in from the front edge of the green at No. 13.
"Playing with John (Ellis) and Manuel (Inman) made it was a fun day out there," he concluded.
The second round concluded this morning with 62 players making the cut at one over par 145..
The top six players on the leaderboard made the most of AMJ Campbell Moving Day. Every player but one shot 67 while Costa Rica Classic winner Mauricio Molina shot 66. George Bradford also shot 66 to jump to a tie for 14th.
The tournament proved to be a major disappointment for a number of TOUR members who missed the cut. Derek Gillespie is battling injuries again; James Allenby was playing in his first professional event; Graham DeLaet, after a spectacular start on the South African has yet to make a cut in three pro events in North America; Darren Griff was returning to the CanTour for the first time since wrist surgery coast him all of last year on the sidelines; Craig Hicks of Tecumseh, ON traveled a long way only to have to withdraw after an opening round of 78.
