Choi & Kirby -- CN Future Links Pacific Champions

Albin Choi, a 16-year-old junior from Toronto, saved his very best for the very last and it was just enough to record his first CN Future Links Pacific Championship on Vancouver Island's demanding Morningstar Golf Club course in Parksville, British Columbia.

After earlier shooting scores of 72 and 77, Choi began Sunday's final round tied for 11th, six shots behind the leader. He was still not making much headway after nine holes even though he had recorded a pair of birdies and a bogey.

However, Choi, a member at the Caledon Woods Golf Club, suddenly exploded for an eagle-3 on the 487-yard par-5 10th hole and followed that up with birdies at the 11th, 13th and 17 holes to finish his round at 6-under par 66--- the low round of the tournament and only the second player in the field of 71 to post a score below 70.

Choi's 54-hole score of even par 216 was good enough to win this first of six regional Future Links championships that sponsor CN and the Royal Canadian Golf Association conduct for Canada's elite junior boys and girls 18-years and under.

A shot back in second place at one-over par (69-79-69) 217 was 17-year-old Julien Goulet of St-Roch de l'Achigan, QC, the tournament's only other player with rounds in the 60's.

Mitch Sutton, 17, of London, ON, Canada's reigning junior boy's champion, and Saskatoon's Jesse Gibson, 17, shared third place at 2-over 218 while Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., tied for fifth with Richard Jung of Toronto

"This is my first win at a big event and it feels great," said a thrilled Choi. "The weather was good, the course was in great condition and everything just came together today."

The tournament proved to be quite an experience for Choi who had an injury to overcome.

"My ankle was hurting a lot out there, so I had to compensate by changing my swing," added Choi. "I've been talking to coach (Henry) Brunton this week and he helped by giving me advice on how to deal with the injury."

Today's final round caught organizers off guard and play had to be delayed for 30-minutes due to a late April frost on the course.

In the Junior Girls division, Jennifer Kirby sailed to a 4-stroke victory after carding a final-round 5-over par 77 and finishing at 2-over par 219. The 18-year old managed to take home first place honours thanks to an 8-stroke lead she had built up over the first two rounds.

"I played great the first two days and I'm happy I was able to come into today with a decent lead," said Kirby following the win. "It's great to win early on in the season. It was a strong field this week, so winning here gives me a boost of confidence going forward."

Kirby had three significant wins last year, including the Ontario Junior Girls Championship and two Future Collegian World Tour events. She also won the CN Future Links Prairie Championship in 2007.

This summer, the 18-year old will compete for her third straight season on Canada's Developmental team and has signed on to play with the University of Alabama next year.

Rounding out the top-5 and finishing second was SooBin Kim of Port Coquitlam, B.C., (222). Christine Wong of Richmond, B.C. (224) was 3rd; Team Canada member Sue Kim of Langley, B.C. (227) 4th, and National Development team member Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Richmond Hill, ON, (231) 5th.
