Andrew Robb carded a final round of five-under par 67 to lead the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds to a resounding come-from-behind triumph at the Cal Poly Men's Intercollegiate Golf Tournament Friday at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
UBC entered the final round of play trailing Cal Poly by 14 strokes before posting a tournament-best team score of 280 to finish with a team total of 873 and 10 stokes ahead of host Cal Poly. Sacramento State (888), DePaul (894) and Cal State Stanislaus (896) rounded out the top five over the 6,818-yard par-72 course near San Luis Obispo
The first two rounds saw only one T-Bird, Dave Sheman, post an even par score, however, in Friday's final round, all five T-Birds posted par or better,
Cory Renfrew (75-73-71) finished tied for seventh individually at three-over par 219 while Robb (77-76-67) and Sheman (75-72-73) were just behind at 220 in a tie for ninth. Brandow Markiw (74-75-72) was one back of that group at 221 and Seon Kim (73-79-70) finished at 222.
Sacramento State's Scott DeBorba, the first day leader, won the tournament in a one hole playoff with Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez. Utah Valley's Nick Nelson, also finished tied for the lead, but did not participate in the play-off as Nelson and his teammates had already boarded their plane back to Utah.
The UBC T-Birds now move on to the A.I.I. Championships at Carlton Oaks GC in San Diego April 27-28 followed by the 72-hole NAIA National Championship a month later at the Tournament Players Championship course in Silvis, IL.
The Men's team season concludes May 25-28 with UBC defending their RCGA Canadian University/College title at the King's Forest Golf Course in Hamilton, ON.
Meanwhile, for the second straight NAIA Men's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the Oklahoma Christian University Eagles are ranked No. 1 after receiving 18 of the 20 first place votes. UBC finished second for the second consecutive time.
