For the first time in the three year history of the NAIA CN Gail Moore Collegiate tournament, the host University of British Columbia Thunderbirds women's team has emerged victorious.
Holding a slim one stroke lead after Saturday's chilly opening round at Vancouver's par-73 Shaughnessy G&CC, the T-Birds took advantage of local course knowledge and familiar surroundings to roll to a dominating 23-stroke victory Sunday, despite bone-chilling temperatures and dodging occasional snow flakes.
This was the opening event of the 2009 segment of the NAIA's spring schedule.
UBC captain Kyla Inaba set the pace over the weekend with rounds of 78-76--154, to help the T-Birds record a 36-hole team score of (324-315) 639.
The Victoria Vikes chopped 10 strokes off their opening round team total to move past Concordia Cavaliers into second place with a two-round score of (336-326) 662. The Cavaliers fell back into third place with a score of (325-341) 666 while the Alberta Pandas finished fourth at (378-376) 754.
The UBC women will now head for warmer conditions for their next outing, March 16-17, at the Palms Golf Club in Mesquite, NV for the Spring Break Collegiate.
The U-Vic Vikes will visit Lewiston, Idaho next week for the Lewis & Clark Invitational March 16-17.
