A new golf season usually begins with new expectations for better scores and lower handicaps. It also means the introduction of a new president for the Professional Golfers' Association of British Columbia.
At the recently concluded Annual General Meeting of the PGA of BC, the members have turned to a veteran Head Professional from one of the smallest golf clubs in the province by electing 34-year-old Keith Gibson of Long Beach Golf Course as president for 2009.
Derek Thornley, Head Professional of Richmond CC, was elected as Vice-President.
Gibson, who served as Vice-President last year, joined the PGA of BC 12 years ago, the same season he signed on as the head professional at Long Beach.
The Long Beach Course, Canada's most westerly golf playground, is a scenic nine hole layout that is open 12 months of the year and situated midway between the villages of Ucluelet and Tofino on Vancouver Island, just minutes from the Pacific Ocean, where surfing, whale watching and beach combing entertain golfers and tourists from around the world.
Gibson has also been a part of a remarkable team accomplishment at Long Beach. For two years running three members and Gibson have captured the PGA of BC Pro-Ladies Championship.
Also elected at the AGM to serve on the Board of Directors for two-year terms were incumbents Don Brett-Davies, Patty Jonas and Scott Kolb along with newly-elected Kyle German. Troy Peverley was elected as the new National Representative. Earlier, in an online election, Edd Boudreau was re-elected as the Assistants' Representative.
Other directors not up for election this year included Rob Anderson, Kevin Nesbitt, Shawn Paduano and Thornley.

SPONSOR SOUGHT FOR CLUB PRO SERIES
Efforts are under way to find a new sponsor for the PGA of BC Club Professional Series.
Unfortunately, the title sponsor of the series for its first three years, American Express, is stepping back financially this year and cannot commit to fund the series.
The PGA of BC, through Sales & Marketing Coordinator Grant Gray, is seeking a new sponsor. It is hoped that the series -- six one-day events involving networking, education and a competitive round of golf for Head Professionals, Head Teaching Professionals and Executive Professionals -- can still take place in 2009.
