Graham DeLaet Looking At Home In South Africa

With the success Graham De Laet is enjoying during his first two starts on South Africa's Sunshine Tour the Weyburn, Saskatchewan native may not be in a rush to return to the Canadian Tour.

Two tournaments---a pair of 12th-place finishes---12th place on the Order of Merit money list---winnings of 284,733.17 SAR. (Saudi Arabian Riyals). Converted at today's exchange rate that amounts to $94,372 Canadian. About $30,000 more than he made all last season on the Canadian Tour.

Tied for 12th last week in the Sunshine Tour's Joburg Open in Johannesburg, DeLaet finished alone in 12th this weekend in the Africa Open Golf Challenge in East London after shooting (63-74-64-74--275) 13-under par.

DeLaet was in second place after the openinbg round and began Sunday's final round in fifth place before finishing eight strokes back of the winner, two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa.

Wes Heffernan of Calgary tied for 46th at 3-under par (70-70-70-75) 285. In two events he's in 62nd place on the Order of Merit list with 25,000 SAR.

Goosen lipped out on the final hole for a birdie leaving the door open for a possible five-player playoff that failed to materialize. Hard-charging youngster Branden Grace of South Africa, Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey and Darren Clarke and South Africa's Darren Fichardt all came up short, giving Goosen a one shot victory.

"This year, I feel I am a little more prepared for the game than over the last couple of years" said the winner.

"I have been working hard on my fitness and everything. I'm probably the fittest now that I've been in the last five years. I'm looking forward the season ahead."
