Delaet Delighted With South African Payday

Weyburn, Saskatchewan's Graham Delaet posted a final round two-under par 69 to finish in a tie for 12th place in the Sunshine Tour's Joburg Open in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sunday collecting the second largest payday of his young professional career.

The two-time Saskatchewan Amateur champion (2005-06) finished at nine-under par (72-66-68-69--275), tied with eight others and collected approximately $24,300 CAD (201,233.17 South African Rand).

Anders Hansen of Denmark, with a final round of 66, birdied the final hole at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club East Course to finish at 15-under 269 and beat South African Andrew McLardy by one stroke for the Joburg Open title and 2,256,089 SAR ($271,468 CAD).

The Joburg Open is an event on the Sunshine Tour and is a co-sanctioned tournament wth the European Tour.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen (74), who started the final round just one shot behind, had nine bogeys -- six on the back nine. However, he did entertain the crowd with a 240-yard albatross (3-under par) on the par-five 18th.

David Drysdale (69) was third, ahead of Danny Willett (68), Charl Schwartzel (70) and Tyrone van Aswegen (68).

Defending champion Richard Sterne (68) finished in a tie for 12th place. Sterne had been trying to win a third consecutive tournament on the European Tour -- a feat only achieved by Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros.

Despite a solid finish, Delaet actually lost ground against the leader although he finished higher. He began Sunday's final round three strokes behind the leaders and tied for 17th. He finished six shots out of first in 12th place.

Last August Delaet earned $32,000 during his second Canadian Tour season. He won the Desjardins Montreal Open presented by Lexus and concluded the season with a pair of second place finishes , earning over $66,000 for the year and finishing in fourth place on the Canadian Tour's Order of Merit money list.
